A Slice of the Indian Himalayas

Varanasi
Everyday

In this series of virtual tours, we look at a vertical cross-section of the Kumaon Himalayas, which simultaneously represent different elevations and climatic zones, thus giving a sense of the scale and diversity of the landscape. We cover the foothill deciduous forests, the lake districts of Shivaliks, the conifer covered central hills, and icy glaciers of the Upper Himalayas. We talk to the forest-dwelling Pahadis and the agriculturalist of the terai, the shepherds of the high passes and the fishermen of the river valleys, visit the millennium-old stone temples, the quaint mountain villages and the odd colonial hill station.

All of the above is tied together with a contextual narrative on the evolution of the Indian Himalayas.
