Kushti Akhara with a Pehelwan
Kushti Akhara with a Pehelwan
This one is especially for all the fitness freaks out there! Learn a millennia-old Indian traditional wrestling form of Kushti with one of its most fervent hobbyists, in a 400-year old functional Akhara. Participate in the natural exercise routines involving Indian style dand push-ups, climbing ropes on a tree, swinging maces and more! Also, understand the diet regimen of the Pehelwans, and witness (or even participate in!) a bout of wrestling ☺
About the host – Siyaram Ji has been practicing Kushti for the last 54 years, and even today, at 64 years can give most of us youngsters a run for their money when it comes to fitness! We did the sunrise boat tour with Mudita and north city walking tour with Aayush.
The experience was unbeatable, and made Varanasi come alive for us. My memories and understanding of Varanasi would have been very different had we not done the tours.
Mudita was patient, accommodating and went out of her way to include the wrestling ring/ akhada which was not in our tour itinerary. Aayush was simply one of the best guides I have had in 50 odd countries of travel. The walking tour was crafted to be extremely interesting. Also he could answer our questions, and had such interesting facts to share.
Couldn’t recommend the company more!

We had a wonderful experience seeing Banaras with Aayush. He is extremely friendly, and his enthusiasm, knowledge, and passion for Banaras shine through.
The geography of old Banaras with its warren of narrow lanes can be very confusing for the new visitor (especially during the Monsoon season, when the Ghats are flooded) – and Aayush expertly guided us through the maze, we and saw many sights that we would have missed on our own. In addition, having a knowledgeable insider with us allowed us to experience Banaras in a way we simply could not with just a guide book. A particular highlight of our walks was the visit to an akhara (a traditional wrestling centre), where our guide himself trains and knows all the other wrestlers! As a paan enthusiast, the Banarasi paan he recommended was great too !
We highly recommend Roobaroo Walks to the curious traveller, and wish the Roobaroo team the best of luck in their future plans to help visitors by shining a light on the city of light!
