The Nawabs, the British and the city of Lucknow

Varanasi
Everyday

Long before the great uprising of 1857 (caused by the stealing of Avadh and triggered by the greased cartridges), the colonial powers were waging war all over south Asia. The British expansion in the sub continent was partly funded by the Nawab’s treasuries and the company’s victorious regiments largely consisted of sepoys from Avadh

We navigate through a series of fascinating monuments built by a succession of Nawabs and trace the evolving dynamics of their fatal relationship with the British. We explore Palace complexes, gardens and streets that witnessed thousands of war-casualties, pour over old maps and lithographs, walk around ruined royal homes with vast underground galleries (being excavated), stand under intricate old archways and double domed mousleums with a birds eye view of the city. And we ponder over one of the most intriguing phenomenon of recent history – the rise of Colonialism!

Walk Highlights

Chateau de Lyon or the Farhat Baksh

Chhatar manzil palace complex

Afeem Kothi and Kaiserbagh palace complex (Safed Baradari, lakhi gate)

Panoramic view of the city from the top of Saadat Ali Khan’s tomb – a masterpiece of Awadhi architecture with a rare opportunity to stand between the double domes

Incredible insights, interactive and mind boggling

I took the walk of Lucknow Residency which was a total eye opener about the role and position of Awadh in the revolution of 1857. Never before did I find a day by day story of war told so creatively. Sameer is highly knowledgeable and can answer with intriguing anecdotes. Totally loved it and highly recommended. By – AnSa2610 ( September, 2019)

A peak into the pages of history through a beautiful narrative walk by Roobaroo walks

“Awadh” as Lucknow was known is a city of untold history and many fascinating cultural stories. I was grateful that I could be part of the one day customised tour of Roobaroo walks which included the Residency, interesting lanes of Chowk – checking the chikankari, itar, the famous Tunde kebabs and ending it with La Martinere college. Interacting with Samir was an enthralling experience as he unfolded the history pages so creatively with his stories supported with maps and pictures. By – Ruchi S (4 November 2019)
