Munshi Premchand’s Lamahi

Written by Roobaroo Team

Dhanpat Rai Srivastav, better known by his pen-name Munshi Premchand, was born in the village Lamhi, 5kms away from Varanasi, on this very day 135 years back. A novel writer, story writer and dramatist who used his pen to make people aware of the malpractices prevalent in the society, he has been referred to as the “Upanyas Samrat” (“Emperor among Novelists”) of Hindi Literature. 79 years after his demise, his birthday is still celebrated with great ferver in his village 🙂

A play based on one of his classics – ‘Do Bheega Zameen’ being enacted in the Ramlila ground at Lamhi as the villagers gathered in great numbers to watch!

A fine poem on the life of Premchand being recited by this amazing poet

His house has now been converted to a Museum housing memoirs of life’s work, courtesy the effort of a professor of Hindi literature in Bangalore, who coaxed the government into taking action for preserving our heritage.
