The Eye of the storm: Lucknow and the First war of Independence

Varanasi
Everyday

More than 160 years have passed since the great uprising of 1857, an era defining conflict with impacts felt across the colonial-corporate world of the time. Nowhere is the legacy of this watershed event better preserved than in the city of Lucknow, the true epicentre of the first war of Independence.

We visit magnificent buildings that were battlegrounds and gardens that were defended to the last man, ride streets that saw a thousand war casualties, and pour over hurriedly drawn maps of the time to follow routes taken by the armies. We also listen to narratives of soldiers and civilians who fought the war. The exact itinerary would be decided based on your time availability and interests. And the pricing would be decided accordingly

Walk Highlights

The British residency.

Chattar Manzil Palace complex.

Kaiserbag palace complex.

Sikandar bag – Hazratganj Arc.

Shah Najaf – Moti Mahal – Botanical gardens.

La-Martiniere- Dhilkusha palaces.

Hands-on History & Culture Lab

All the nuances that our history books do *not* cover!! Amazing experience. History, culture, architecture, food, and fine arts all rolled into one. Some highlights that are my key take-aways: Seeing British Empire’s opium depot used in the Opium War – it is still standing! Components of a shayari. Kathak performance. Ganjing – got to see what gets UP yuppies excited! Primacy of Awadh in Indian polity. The absolute best – the Residency – nucleus of the the 1857 Rebellion/Mutiny – got see trenches where this was fought. By – Vittal P (16 August,2019)
